WRITE THE MOVEMENT

Paint & Textures

Marie Amédro, born in 1989, is a French painter. Full-time artist since 2018, she lives and works in Arras, in northern France. After studying Art Design and earning a degree in Communication and Marketing, she developed a predominantly abstract aesthetic, heavily influenced by her work in computer graphics. She primarily works on cotton rag paper and linen.

Marie works in series. The progressive and evolving development of her works is an essential aspect reflected in each series. Behind the clarity and minimalism of the compositions, the observer can also perceive a manipulation of materials that makes fixed points of reference oscillate. This impression is reinforced by the fragmentary structure of the works. Upon closer inspection, different layers and textures are revealed.

To understand Marie's current works, one must know their origins.
At the end of 2025, a collective reflection on "the present moment" led her to rethink her approach to working and composing her pieces. What is the present moment? How can it be captured? How can its importance be recognized and how can it be expressed?

It was ultimately by writing down all her ideas that she found the answers to her questions. Writing seemed to her to be the concept closest to her definition of the present moment. For Marie, writing is intimate, spontaneous, continuous, and rooted in time. Following this path, she began to write shapes in India ink on paper, with the sole intention of painting mindfully with the movement of writing.

This preparatory work then serves as the basis for composing her pieces. She reworks the forms using digital techniques until she achieves the perfect balance between the black movement and the bands of color. Only once this balance is achieved is the work transferred on another medium, such as paper or canvas.

The artist paints her compositions in flat planes with acrylic paint, giving them volume by exploring different avenues such as the use of fabric or sand, her preferred material. This relief, which is an integral part of her creative process, has a specific symbolism associated with it.

In this new creative process, the artist returned to her very first source of inspiration: trees. In 2018, reading about tree metabolism led her to create geometric and symbolic works. Thus, her choice of colors and textures is not arbitrary. Blue, yellow, red, white, and green represent, respectively, the elements water, sun, earth, air, and chlorophyll—elements essential to the development of life. Sand, initially a symbol of bark, then comes to materialize this life.

You will notice that the background of the compositions is worked in several sections, with a strip of linen creating a pause. A pause that invites the eye to linger at a certain moment and compels us to slow down, to take our time. A pause that imposes silence. A pause that allows color to express its power and unleash emotions.
